The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), used by some older energy meters to switch between peak and off-peak is being switched off in phases across the country.
Suppliers are contacting affected customers to upgrade to smart meters, the only technical replacement for RTS setups.
How to spot likely RTS in your home:
- A separate box near the meter labelled ‘Radio Teleswitch’
- Electric heating, especially storage heaters/panel heaters/immersion tanks charged overnight
- No gas locally (rural villages/hamlets)
- Economy 7/Economy 10/Total Heat Total Control Tariffs
If an RTS meter isn’t replaced, heating and hot water may fail or run at the wrong time, and bills could rise.
If impacted, residents should contact their energy suppliers and book for a replacement meter to be fitted.
