The Interpretation Centre was opened in November 2000, as a Millennium Project with support from The Environment Trust and Thames Water.

The basis of the project had been to convert the old compound by demolishing the old sheds and garages and to build the Timber Clad building, which houses equipment and provides a well appointed field study centre for local students and school children, as well as a facility to hire for other events, such as the local thriving toddler group.
