This week our Wednesday Volunteers helped our Park Rangers build two hibernacula.
Hibernacula are underground chambers created for amphibians and reptiles (such as frogs, toads, newts, lizards, and snakes) to use to stay warm and undisturbed during the winter when they become inactive.
Speaking about the project our Park Ranger said “We did this by digging a 50cm deep square hole into the ground, before covering the base with a layer of woodchip. Twigs, logs, stones, and bricks were then piled into the hole, before crinkled drainpipes were placed on opposite sides as an entrance and exit point. The previously dug up soil was then placed back on top, covering everything but the end of the pipes.”
