In the run up to the start of COP26, Earley Town Council is organising 26 environmentally themed events or activities to engage, inform and encourage Earley residents to join in with the climate change conversation, the Town Council’s 26 to COP26.
So far, Earley Town Council has been involved in a Thameside Litter Pick, at which the Town Mayor of Earley assisted volunteers to remove a huge haul of litter and refuse from an area close to the Waterside Centre, and has organised a workshop where representatives from local community groups discussed and commented on the Town Council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan and its draft Green Infrastructure Plan. Last week saw a very popular Bat Walk being run at the Maiden Erlegh Nature Reserve where residents learnt more about these fantastic flying mammals and were provided with hot chocolate to help keep away the autumnal nip.
A varied selection of events and activities will be taking place over the next few weeks, highlights include a Moths & Muffins morning, a 5 for 5 Clothes Swap, Storytelling at the Gemini Oak, visits to a local Wind Turbine, and a picture trail for children. There really is something for everyone. All events and activities are free of charge but, when places are limited, places must be booked in advance.
The Town Council will also be handing out specially produced postcards at events encouraging residents to write down a question or a message they would like to send to those attending the COP26 conference. The plan is for the Town Council to deliver the completed postcards to Alok Sharma MP, Chair of COP26, to provide him with a snapshot of local residents’ views on the climate emergency and how we can address it.
